Room 9

Work hard, be kind, make a difference.

By Corey Blanton

October 1st  We are starting Unit 1 in our new ELA curriculum today.  It's all about communities.  Today we read a story about a community garden and how it came together.  Then the kids had to tell a key detail from the text. That was hard!  This is something we will work on all year.  When you are reading at home with your kiddo, ask about important details in the story.  This is a huge concept, but an important one in first grade!  We are finishing up our Unit 1 in math - all about number partners. We'll take the Unit 1 test on Thursday. Then Friday we will make a fun math craft! Next week we will start focusing on addition and subtraction strategies.  For social studies, we are still focusing on character, classroom citizenship, and kindness.

Welcome to Room 9!

Welcome to Room 9! I am excited to get to know my new first graders.  We are going to have a great year!

The first two weeks....

During the first two weeks, we've spent a lot of time learning routines and procedures.  We've talked a LOT about being a good listener and what that means.  We learned about "whole body" listening - ask you students to tell you about it!  It includes listening with your eyes, ears, arms, feet, body, brain and heart.   We've started learning about what reading will look and sound like in our classroom, and begun routines for Readers Workshop each day, where kids will be working at different tasks while I pull reading groups and kids to work with. We talked about what Mathematicians do, explored our math manipulatives and discussed the difference between math tools and toys.  We've had two great music classes and visited the library today.  We have been VERY busy!

Homework

Occasionally you will see some work come home from class with a small note attached.  This is work that did not get finished in class.  If it comes home, please have your child complete it and return it by the date on the note. :)

Continue to have your child practice tying their shoes!! When they can tie a shoe all by themselves, they can show me and they will get a prize!  :)

My name is Corey Blanton.  I have 9 years teaching experience, with some time as a stay at home mom in between some of them! This is my third year at JDES! I absolutely LOVE teaching first grade.  It's my favorite! I have my bachelors degree in Elementary Education, with a specialization in Early Childhood Education, from The Ohio State University.  Go Buckeyes!!!!!  I have a Master's Degree in Reading and Literacy as well. I have been married for 18 years, I have four kids, ages 17, 15 ½, 13 and 11. I also have a 2 year old, crazy mutt named Einstein that I adore!! My kids are involved in Marching Band, Color Guard, Boy Scouts, musical theatre, and art, which means I'm involved in those things too! They keep me very busy!

Some fun facts about me:  I'm a HUGE Harry Potter fan (I'm a Ravenclaw), I love wearing Converse,  I love reading, children's literature, and movies. My family is full of "nerds" (and we are proud of it!) and we obsess over Harry Potter, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar movies. My absolute happy place is Universal Studios in Hogsmede Village drinking a butterbeer and watching little witches and wizards believe in magic.  JK Rowling is my hero.  First Grade is my absolute favorite grade to teach and I LOVE it, even though it's also one of the hardest grades to teach. I think the minions are absolutely adorable and I wish I had 50 of them living with me. I absolutely love my job! Strawberries are my favorite food (fresh ones, not strawberry flavored things...) and I HATE peas.  I get migraines...they are no fun.   I love going to Target, shopping on Amazon, and sleeping (not something I do often enough...).  I LOVE to laugh.  One of my very best friends teaches next door to me in room 10, which makes my job even greater! I think Pete the Cat is totally Groovy and the Pigeon and Elephant and Piggie make me laugh.  Did I mention I love my job?
